9WOOD Team Biographies

9Wood's staff bring together decades of woodworking, operations and project experience towards executing Made-to-Order projects (Grilles, Linears, Tiles) and Engineered-to-Order projects (Wood Waves, As-Built defined projects). Nothing in specialty fabrication substitutes for experience and natural gifting. That is the 9Wood difference: attracting and keeping talented people. It certifies our watch word: "Experts in Wood Ceiling Fabrication."

Leo Batenhorst leads our Project Management efforts, entering the field in 1999. Effective Project Management is a critical link in successful project oriented manufacturing. A background in teaching, supported by an MS in Mathematics, has paid dividends in supporting his many accomplishments in well run projects. With an MDiv also in hand, testimony to his proven people skills, Leo heads up our HR efforts. This is a critical role because empowered employees are a foundation to the 9Wood knowledge-based Engineered-to-Order environment.

Notable past projects: NY Law, UCSD Cancer Center, CalPERS.

Dan Boustead heads Operations. Dan brings both a detailed orientation to the task of routing projects through our company, and a remarkable tenacity to pursue the truth about any issue facing that project. Having been Head of Engineering, he is perhaps the best wood ceiling Project Engineer in the country today, with a long list of accomplishments to his resume.

Notable past projects: Paine Webber, LA Cathedral, MIT Simmons Hall, Sunset Presbyterian.

Andy Gossard is our Controller. But he brings far more to the job than just counting beans and collecting money. Andy spent 12 years in the import plywood business. He knows Engineered Wood, a key—and growing—raw material used in suspended wood ceilings. Andy also has been a catalyst, as chapter boardmember for The Association for Operations Management, toward introducing 9Wood to Enterprise Resource Planning and the Theory of Constraint management.

Notable past projects: NY Law, UA Medical, Gymboree and CalPERS.

Charley Coury serves as our National Sales Manager and Chief Estimator. Entering the wood ceilings business in 1991, Charley has built rich relationships with some of the most talented independent sales reps in the country. These skilled and experienced individuals are keys towards achieving 9Wood’s sales goals: to help architects realize their design visions. Having acted for many years as a Senior Project Manager, he brings a depth of technical knowledge to the field, what he calls consultative sales.

Notable past projects: Salk Institute, Paine Webber, LA Cathedral, MIT Simmons Hall, UCSD Cancer Center, Getty Villa.

Michael Roemen began working in the wood ceilings industry six years ago after graduating from the University of Oregon (Go Ducks!). Since that time, he has departed and returned, but not before working in a variety of capacities including a prolonged stay as a teacher in Nagano, Japan. He came back to 9Wood to work in the sales and marketing department in 2005 where he keeps busy with quotes, phone calls, and promotional responsibilities.

Notable past projects: Corporate HQ, Reebok

Jonathan Warner brings a strong background in wood ceiling manufacturing. Starting on the shop floor in 1995, Jonathan rose through the ranks to eventually lead the critical Finishing Department and Custom Stains. Tapped for his product knowledge and detail orientation, Jonathan was promoted to Project Management in 2000. His passion for “earned optimism” and digging out the details, twin keys to successful project management, make him a very successful PM. Tested through experience he has honed his considerable talents. He is also applying these skills towards perfecting our MRP (Manufacturing Resource Planning) infrastructure.

Notable past projects: Whistler Four Seasons, Phoenix Skyharbor, LA Cathedral, UCSF Fresno.

Barry Hughes leads our shop as foreman. Besides a master’s degree in botany, Barry’s eclectic talents both with wood and people have made him an indispensable supervisor at 9Wood. His deep experience in cabinet and wood ceiling manufacturing (since 1996), a strong leadership gift, and a natural talent for operations make him the ultimate shop foreman.

Notable past projects: Doernbecher’s Children’s Hospital, CalPERS, Armstrong Mission Style Stairwell.

Nathan Pfeifer heads our engineering department, and not without a studied experience in wood ceilings. Taking an uncommon but exceptional path to engineering, Nathan began his career on the shop floor in 2000. Marshalling a personal drive to grow and learn, Nathan mastered the skills of AutoCAD drafting and engineering to rise to the position of Head of Engineering. He is now an adjunct professor teaching AutoCAD at our local community college. We call him Professor Pfeifer.

Notable past projects: SF Federal Courthouse, Whistler Four Seasons, Phoenix Skyharbor, Palm Beach County Convention Center.

Patty Farley’s strong customer service talents focused on the wood ceiling industry since 2002. Her evident joy in serving architects, reps and customers has been infectious; along with her helpful product knowledge. If a sample needs to get out, a guide spec to be sent, project pricing worked up, she’s the person to contact.

Notable past projects: CISCA award submittals for LA Cathedral, MIT, UCSD Cancer Center, Palm Beach County Convention Center.

Trevor Rollman joined 9Wood's Estimating department in 2006. He brings a background in fine woodworking and cabinetry. His well-rounded experiences include growing up in a family-owned commercial salmon fishing operation in Alaska, a five month missions trip to Guinea, West Africa, graduating from Eugene Bible College, and a 1600 mile west coast bicycle tour with his wife, Adria.

Petr Kovarik is a leader in the Engineering Dept. He has extensive and seasoned experience in the engineering and development of wood ceilings. Petr has been involved with several large-scale notable projects, most notably Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral in Los Angeles. Petr has also worked in the project management division, which has added another dimension to his knowledge-base and capabilities.

Notable past projects: Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral, MIT Simmons Hall, Getty Museum.

Kevin Olson entered the wood ceiling field in 2002, having owned his own cabinet shop, following years as a journeyman cabinet maker. Kevin’s asset is a wealth of experience--and in woodworking nothing substitutes for know-how. He’s our Norm Abram; his Sample Area our New Yankee Workshop. Sample making is not for the faint of heart; Kevin’s craftsmanship and knowledge of wood ceiling products sets him at the master craftsman level.

Notable past projects: Larry Ellison Residence.

Phil Swygart combines a strong background in woodworking, from cabinet, furniture and plywood fabrication, progressing toward the wood ceiling industry in 1999. His expertise in computerized fabrication machinery, and a natural talent for detail, have led him toward CAD drafting. In the realm of custom As-Built projects, exact and accurate production drawings are critical to quality control. Phil’s exemplary performance continues to link engineering and production at 9Wood.

Notable past projects: CalPERS, UCSD Cancer Center, Medical Research Center.

Jayson Hayes joined the 9Wood team with over 10 years in the secondary wood products and CNC industry. An accomplished woodworker, Jayson is entrusted with supervising the production of highly-ETO (Engineered-to-Order) projects. The nature of these projects requires extra attention to detail, with the knowledge to see it through properly. In his off time he enjoys the outdoors and tinkering with his International Scout.

Notable past projects: SF Federal Courthouse

Vjera Thompson is our assistant bean counter. She is new to the wood ceiling business, but manages payroll and piles of bills with zeal. She brings a vivacious personality to 9Wood as she answers the phones, assists with samples, and files the flurries of paperwork. Occasionally, she even rides her unicycle to the office.

Notable past projects: CalPERS FSC-Certification audit

Tonya Cronkright is a drafting student and working part-time at 9Wood in the Engineering Department. She has a strong work ethic which means she prides herself on producing quality work, willingly takes responsibility, and follows through on projects with minimal supervision. In addition to her proven work history, she brings a good foundation in AutoCAD, and has the ambition to learn more.

Hope Arnold joined the 9Wood team in Winter of 2005 to work on 9Wood's in-house promotional material production team. She stepped into an administrative office role in Spring of 2006 when she took a position at the front desk and became the new welcoming face at 9Wood. While the youngest full-time office employee (by far), Hope brings her interpersonal and organizational skills to the office environment, as well as a homeschooled academic history that earned her an Advanced Placement Scholar Award in 2005. She also brings College Board commended writing and literary skills to her position. In-between answering phones, filing faxes and keeping the office supplies stocked, she does a plethora of jobs. These include assisting Sales and Marketing, backing the Design and Concept Sample process, handling miscellaneous express shipping, maintaining the MSDS and HSIS information, assisting in administrative shop roles and she can even be found elbows deep in toner doing copier repairs.
