The California Public Employees Retirement
System (CalPERS) building was completed in July, 2005. The project
specified a 76,000 square foot wood grille ceiling utilizing Forest
Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified Natural Maple. The sheer volume
of wood grilles set CalPERS apart to say nothing of sourcing enough
FSC Natural Maple wood.
Besides the considerable factors of size and LEED compliance was
that of schedule. The prior manufacturer was not able to complete
production of the ceiling, and by the time 9Wood was brought on
board it was already 2 ½ months behind schedule and only
20% complete. With the grand opening looming, 9Wood made the
decision to put its shoulder to the task and see it through. After
2 months of around-the-clock production, 9Wood's production
team hit the exact day of promise to delivery. The results were
a beautiful ceiling complimenting the Asian motif of the CalPERS
building design.
