Solid Western Hemlock with Custom Stain

SKU(s): 19-1114-3

The 9Wood 1100 wood grilles ceiling in Western Hemlock with a custom finish with a ceiling to wall transition, and an integrated wall detail. SEAS worked with SEARS to provide custom aluminum mounting brackets for both the cantilevered wall details and transition to the ceiling panels. Clancy’s team worked with the installers to incorporate custom finish details throughout the project as shown in the integrated door detail.

The 9Wood 1100 Wood Grilles ceiling in Western Hemlock with a custom finish was designed to create a seamless and visually striking ceiling-to-wall transition, incorporating an integrated wall detail for a cohesive architectural aesthetic. This installation required careful coordination to achieve a smooth transition between the ceiling and vertical surfaces while maintaining the warmth and natural beauty of the wood grilles.

To meet the project’s unique structural and design requirements, SEAS collaborated closely with SEARS to develop custom aluminum mounting brackets. These brackets were engineered specifically to support both the cantilevered wall elements and the transition between the ceiling panels, ensuring stability while preserving the project’s sleek, modern look. Throughout the process, the team at Clancy & Theys Construction Company worked to refine and implement precise finish details that elevated the overall execution. This included meticulous attention to the integrated door detail, where the custom finish was seamlessly incorporated to maintain visual continuity across different architectural elements. High-quality materials and expert execution.

University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Performing Arts Center

University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Performing Arts Center — Edinburg, TX

Solid Western Red Cedar with Clear Finish

SKU(s): 2116-2, 19-1112-8

The University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley’s new Performing Arts Center was designed for their nationally-recognized programs in Mariachi, Baile Folklorico, band, orchestra, and chorus. Over 8,000SF of 9Wood grilles were specified throughout the faceted balconies and walls, and play a key role in meeting the specific acoustic requirements. And 6,000SF of Western Red Cedar Linears join in on the visual performance by greeting guests with a colorful welcome in the exterior soffit areas.

The centerpiece—the theatre—seats over 1,000. Solid White Oak was specified for the lower-elevation seating façades, while stained solid FSC Pacific Albus, a lightweight, economical hardwood, was specified for the upper areas. Page Southerland Page architect Josh Coleman commented that the grilles helped meet the space’s goals of “establishing proper base building geometry for acoustic reflections, creating acoustic dispersion on the walls within the audience chamber, providing acoustic transparency in the upper reaches to allow for acoustic tuning, and heightening the psychological perception of the acoustics through the selective use of wood.”

For the acoustical subcontractor, Marek Bros., this was a new installation experience. “It was our first job with this type of product…but the project actually went really smoothly. The product was easy to work with. 9Wood did a great job with the shop drawings and support. They were very helpful.” Marek cut nominally-sized panels to net length to fit the BIM and GPS data-confirmed geometric facades.

The front door of the building features 9Wood Western Red Cedar Panelized Linears. The variegation of the species naturally ties in with the confetti-color theme of the building, and echoes the brick throughout campus. Coleman says, “We feel this project separates itself from other designs by the way wood and other materials helped to create unique and innovative solutions for multiple design issues – including architectural, acoustic, and theatrical.”

Solid Western Hemlock with Custom Stain

SKU(s): 1112-8

The Alaska State Library, Archives, and Museum in Juneau, Alaska features 21,380 SF wood grille ceilings. They span heights upwards of 42 feet over the building’s lobby, library, and reading room.

The project features 3,282 individual wood grille panels made of solid Western Hemlock. The wood grille panels are all 1’ wide and in various lengths. Alaska SLAM also made use of 98 LF of square wood trim pieces.

The wood grille ceiling is a mosaic of triangular shapes all on pitched planes, forming a series of inverted hips and valleys. The entire ceiling assembly is raked from one end of the building to the other—about 42’ at one point, down to 16’ over the library.

“The ceiling is evocative of the rugged [area] landscapes,” said architect Steve Simpson of Hacker Architects (formerly THA Architecture), Portland, Oregon. “The contour flattens out near the perimeter clerestory windows, allowing direct views of the high mountain ridgelines.”

Alaska SLAM wood grille ceilings were the result of five years of planning, design, and fabrication by 9Wood.
