Cray Court TI — San Diego, CA

Solid Western Hemlock with Oak Stain

SKU(s): 1414-4, 2114-3, 2416-3

The three wood ceiling styles coalesce into more than just a ceiling; they form a narrative of texture, form, and the subtle yet profound impact of material choice in architecture. The interplay of natural light and shadow brings to life the intricate patterns and textures of the distinct 9Wood ceiling styles.

The 1400 Grilles, with their rhythmic assembly, lend a tactile quality that invites the observer into a dance of light and lines. The precision in their uniformity juxtaposes the organic nature of the wood, creating a serene yet striking visual experience.

The 2100 Panelized Linears exude a contemporary elegance. Tight linear sequences with thin even revels, these panels offer a sleek counterpoint to the robust texture of the grilles.

The third element in this triumvirate of wooden artistry is the 2400 Tongue and Groove Linears. The tongue and groove installation ensures a seamless visual continuity that sweeps across the expanse, offering an uninterrupted visual flow that enhances the spatial quality of the environment.

The result is a symphony of woodwork that invites admiration and contemplation, a ceiling that does not merely shelter but also elevates the human experience within its embrace.

The Most Accessible Wood Ceiling

Accessibility and dropped wood ceilings are a classic conflict because you have your mechanical systems, HVAC, lighting, and electrical, and then you cover it all up with highly custom decorative wood products. With ceiling accessibility, you must think about the damage over time, whether you’re the designer or the facilities person taking a panel down. State Farm Arena

April 5, 2019 by

State Farm Arena — Atlanta, GA

White Oak Veneer with Custom Stain

SKU(s): 2314-3

The State Farm Arena, Atlanta, a reported $192 million renovation of an existing arena, features about 20,000 sq. ft. of continuous linear wood walls and ceilings.

The most prominent wood feature is the arena’s west side continuous linear ceiling. It’s made of 8-ft.-long, ¾ in. by 3 ¼ in., custom-stained, plain-sliced, white oak veneer over fire-rated particleboard core planks. The ceiling hangs above the upper-level concourse seating, 90 feet above the arena floor.

“The introduction of wood within the bowl and concourses was a strategic decision to bring warmth, comfort and a sense of richness to the building resulting in a space that looks and feels more like a concert hall than an arena. 9Wood was easy to work with to obtain a custom color that complemented the material palette, and provided the flexibility in installation solutions for the various applications used throughout the building.” says Architect Emily Louchart of HOK (St. Louis, MO.)

Field Cutting Acoustic Planks and Acoustic Tiles

Acoustic planks and acoustic tiles can be tricky to cut in the field because of the vulnerable “teeth” that make up acoustic wood products.  By using the right tools and techniques, field cutting can be accomplished successfully.  (“Teeth” are the results of grooves cut into a wood panel which in turn intersect a hole drilled in the back of the panel. This combination groove …

Sacramento International Airport – Landside Terminal

Sacramento International Airport - Landside Terminal — Sacramento, CA

White Maple Veneer, Solid Reclaimed Redwood with Clear Finish, Clear Finish

SKU(s): 83-3116-2, 1126-2, 1123-3

Travelers through Sacramento International Airport got a fresh terminal to greet them in 2011. The new space, part of a $1.03 billion renovation, updates the infrastructure of the hard-working airport with some architectural pizazz, accented by specialty ceilings. This project faced challenges typical of all specialty product installations: last minute design changes, long lead-time materials, tight schedules and a technical installation. But this ceiling also faced certain unique challenges, including meeting tight acoustic requirements, using reclaimed redwood, achieving color consistency, and mating curved ceilings with architectural metal closures. And it all had to be installed fast enough to maintain the removal schedule of the 45-foot scaffold.

Materials were a key design element for the airport’s 65-foot high ceilings. A monochromatic pallet was chosen using white maple acoustic planks highlighted with redwood grilles. To achieve the desired color consistency, 9Wood hand-blended veneers for the finished ceiling. 9Wood also supplied 17,000 square feet of reclaimed redwood grilles and 55,000 square feet of custom acoustic planks – an unusually large scope. A high noise reduction coefficient requirement of .85 meant the development team needed to achieve maximum acoustic absorption while maintaining a minimal percent opening for aesthetics. This was accomplished using special acoustic backing material and several geometric changes to 9Wood’s standard system.

The grilles were made from reclaimed redwood. The redwood was sourced from timbers once part of a local bridge built in 1937 and damaged by floods in 1997. Each beam was inspected for best yield, scanned with metal detectors, re-sawn and molded to specification. The client asked 9Wood to collect grading marks branded into the wood to link the airport wood back to its origins. Despite age and weathering, the tight-grained Redwood beams yielded salvageable material with beautiful worn character.

Wood trellises over the ticket counters also used the reclaimed redwood. Designed to suspend between outriggers using 2-inch powder coated steel tubing, each ticket counter trellis needed to install as one unit. Meeting proper tolerances for attachments required custom engineering: the assembly needed to prevent cracking in the weathered redwood. The assembly also needed to be constructed such that that the members could slip over the pipe yet be kept from sliding like an abacus. The 6-foot by 7-foot trellis units were heavy, bulky and entirely pre-finished. Spacetone Acoustics coordinated a flawless installation.

Visitors looking up at these specialty ceilings will find a remarkable expression of design, engineering and installation craftsmanship.
