Freddie Mac HQ 1 — McLean, VA

Solid Western Hemlock with Oak Stain

SKU(s): 1113-5

Hovering above the dynamic spaces of Freddie Mac HQ1 in McLean, Virginia, is a wood ceiling installation that speaks to both tradition and innovation. With the ceiling bending down the walls int the entry corridor, the Oak-Stained wood weaves an atmosphere of warmth and sophistication, envisioned by the creative minds at Interior Architects (IA) in Washington DC.

In the communal spaces, the woodwork draws together form, function, and aesthetics, casting an ambiance that encourages open dialogue and collaboration. It’s a design choice that reflects Freddie Mac’s commitment to creating environments that are conducive to sharing ideas and fostering professional relationships.

The same wood installation transitions into the executive areas, carrying its distinctive elegance into the realms of decision and direction. The Standard Oak stain of the grille against the backdrop of modern furnishings and strategic lighting creates a compelling narrative—one of legacy and forward-thinking, of grounding and aspiration.

At Freddie Mac HQ1, the wood ceiling in the entry corridors stands as a testament to the seamless integration of design elements that are not only visually appealing but also enhance the overall functionality and flow of the workplace.

Forrest Logistics — Phoenix, AZ

Solid Western Hemlock with Clear Finish

SKU(s): 1124-3, 19-1124-3

This lobby design is both functional and stylish, making a strong impression for Forrest Logistics, a full-service transportation company that Moves more than freight – they simplify your shipping and transportation needs at any level.

9Wood’s 1100 Cross Piece Grille with white oak veneer offers a warm contrast to the cool white from above and the carefully planned lighting features below.

The installing contractor shared “Forrest Logistics was a challenging yet fun project to be a part of. We have 360 paint suspension system in white above the 9Wood Ceiling which disappears with the white scrim above. With the round logo cut out at the wall and the perfectly matched linear lines of the ceiling above the walls I would say was the biggest challenge. The wall running out on a angle from the ceiling. We had to make sure we had perfect alignment above.” ~Barry C. Williams, Acoustical Estimator / Project Manager from Silver Star Wall Systems

Natural Bamboo with Clear Finish

SKU(s): 2113-4

Working with unusual materials always presents a challenge for manufacturers – especially when the product is a wood ceiling with complex geometry. This project, a university medical research building, incorporated bamboo veneer and a highly custom fabric wrap in a complex 9,400 square foot wall and ceiling system. To further add to the challenge of the project, a design change after the ceiling had already shipped required half the project to be shipped back to the factory and remade, all on a tight schedule.

Bamboo is the fastest-growing woody plant in the world, and thus provides an attractive option as an ecological building material. But, bamboo is technically classified as a grass and can react quite differently to changes in relative humidity in the environment. If the panels aren’t properly balanced, they can warp or crack due to changes in the moisture content of the air. All panels were specially balanced and mechanically stiffened to minimize the impact of wood movement.

Another complicating factor was the complex geometry of the ceiling. The architect’s design called for several triangular sections, starting with 14-foot-long panels. This presented a challenge from two perspectives. First, the diagonal cut required a large number of custom panels, each factory-cut to perfectly fit with the other panels. Second, bamboo veneer is typically unavailable in lengths longer than eight feet. In order to create 14-foot panels, we had to design a unique system of joining two seven-foot members into one long panel.

Despite the complicated design, the biggest challenge of the project came after the entire ceiling and wall system had shipped. The design originally called for half of the ceiling to consist of wood grille panels. After the ceiling was installed, the design was changed to include only linear wood panels. This not only presented a huge logistical challenge, the last-minute nature of the change meant an extremely short schedule. We were able to develop a process for remaking each grille panel into a linear panel without damaging the delicate finish of the wood – while still meeting the aggressive schedule requirements.

The end result is striking: The custom red fabric shines through the bamboo linear members to create a truly unique look that matches the atmosphere of the campus. The articulation of the ceiling and wall panels beautifully combines the wall and ceiling into one cohesive element. The bamboo on FSC™ core reflects the environmentally sustainable nature of the ceiling and contributes to the building’s LEED silver certification. All this was made possible by our expert design team and a high level of flexibility on the part of our production team.

Soka University Performing Arts Center

February 24, 2020 by

Soka University Performing Arts Center — Aliso Viejo, CA

Solid Western Hemlock with Custom Stain

SKU(s): 1111-12

This performing arts center, at a private university in California, incorporated an innovative design that strikingly emphasizes the natural beauty of wood, while creating an excellent and easily controlled acoustic space. This was achieved using tightly spaced grille members formed into curving sections. Computer acoustic modeling provided an optimal shape for the individual members: only 1/2” wide and 11/16” deep. Sound passes easily through this grille lattice where it is absorbed by adjustable acoustic curtains. The architect claims this design “is the current, cutting edge of acoustics in the world.”

From a design standpoint, however, the ceiling presented significant challenges. The curving suspension of the panels had to be coordinated with the curtain tracks, as well as lighting, sprinkler, and speaker penetrations – a task made even more complicated by the changing heights of the different ceiling sections. Our engineering department created a comprehensive three-dimensional model of the entire ceiling, designed to fit into the larger building model—ensuring that the ceiling design would work with the HVAC, lighting, sprinkler, and other systems. The results were spectacular: The ceiling fit perfectly with the other systems, and was completed on schedule and on budget.

Coordination wasn’t the only design challenge. A common attachment method for curved grille panels is to use thin, flexible metal strips to attach the wood members to standard T-Grid. The loud music of the performing arts center could have caused the wood to rattle against the metal backers. In order to avoid this problem, we devised a unique solution: flexible backers made from Medium Density Fiberboard. The MDF backers were designed to be strong enough to support the ceiling load, flexible enough to allow the ceiling to curve, and soft enough to allow the members to be cinched tight against the backers, preventing any rattle.

The result of a well-coordinated design process, innovative attachment methods, and the natural beauty of wood is a wonderful and striking ceiling in the performing arts center, adding to the pleasure of students and community members alike. As the owner asserts, “Everyone has just been thrilled. It’s been unusual for me; it’s been a true collaboration. Everybody wanted to build a great building, but to make it all come together – wow! Satisfaction is very high.”
