Fire Rating

When requested, all components in our products are fabricated using Class A materials. Individual wood members, panels, components and/or scrims are either naturally inert (metal, fiberglass) or coated with Class A Fire Retardant chemicals.

Fire rating codes vary by region, building type, and product type.

These chemicals are either applied as FR coatings (solid wood), mixed into the raw materials during fabrication (fiberboards and scrims) or pressure impregnated after fabrication (FR plywood). Finish coatings meet Class A when tested per ASTM E-84.

9Wood uses no PBDE FR chemicals. ASTM E-84 submittal data is based on tests by 9Wood’s suppliers. Components have not been tested together, either as subassemblies, or in an installed condition, since the product configuration is unique to each project.

  • Fire rating codes vary by region, building type, and product type.
  • Interpretation of the code by the local fire marshal can vary.

To increase certainty of meeting today’s fire marshal requirements, 9Wood recommends sprinkling both the ceiling and the plenum (concealed space).
