If you are exploring custom stains, Rhett is your go-to resource for everything related to wood finishes. A finish does more than enhance your ceiling’s beauty. It adds durability, quality, and long-lasting appeal. Below are answers to common questions to help you choose the right finish for your project.
What type of finish does 9Wood use?
At 9Wood, we use several finish systems, all applied on a flatline spray machine with a reciprocating head. Our finishes fall into two main categories: those that protect the wood and those that enhance its natural appearance.
For stains, there are two components: the carrier of the color and the colorant itself. The carrier affects how deeply and evenly the coating penetrates the wood. The colorant determines the consistency of color and whether the grain will be more pronounced or more muted.
What about sheen (gloss level)?
For interior products, our standard is a matte sheen, around 10 gloss. A matte finish highlights the wood’s natural character, while higher gloss levels increase light reflection and can mask the grain. If a project calls for more sheen, we can provide options like satin, which falls around 15 to 20 gloss.
What physically makes up the finish build?
Finish build refers to the thickness of the coating on the wood, measured in thousandths of an inch, or millage. We apply 3 to 5 wet mills per coat, depending on the coating type. As coatings dry, solids in the wood ceiling finish determine the final dry thickness. For example, applying 3 to 5 wet mills typically results in about 1 dry mill.
What is six-sided finishing?
Six-sided finishing means that every surface of the board—top, bottom, sides, and ends—is coated. At 9Wood, we use six-sided finishing on every product and apply at least two coats until the material has received the proper number of coatings up through that final topcoat. Each product has a different number of coatings, depending on the primary surfaces and product application, such as exterior soffits.
What about in-field wood ceiling finish application?
Good manufacturers know to send the same wood ceiling finish to the installing contractor with their shipment. We provide touch-up finish along with the unique wood stain with every shipment. For interior products, we send Low-VOC touch-up lacquer. For exterior products, we provide an Exterior-Grade Urethane. This ensures cut ends can be properly sealed on site.
How do U.V. finishes compare?
You want to honor the wood used in your clients space. U.V. (ultraviolet) finishes are common in the industry because they are fast and economical. The process cures the coating instantly with ultraviolet light. The trade-off is that color must be applied on top of the cured coating rather than penetrating the wood. This wood ceiling finish method can reduce the depth and natural look of the grain, especially with darker colors. By using penetrating stains as a separate step, a richer, more authentic wood tone is preserved – helping the natural beauty shine.
