Preserving Southwestern Character Through Modern Wood Ceiling Design

The Albuquerque International Sunport’s “Dream of Flight” terminal renovation balanced modernization with a strong sense of place. Known for its Pueblo Revival and Southwestern design, ABQ Sunport needed updated security, concessions, and public spaces while preserving the warm wood details, adobe tones, and regional character that define the traveler experience.

Challenge

The renovation required ceiling systems that could integrate with the airport’s iconic exposed beams, meet seismic requirements, and conceal modern sound-dampening, HVAC, and electrical systems without compromising the terminal’s established architectural identity.

Solution

FBT Architects partnered with 9Wood to incorporate seismically compliant Cross Piece Grilles among the existing beams and suspended wood slat ceilings in other renovated public areas. Solid Western Hemlock provided warm tones that balanced the brick flooring and adobe walls, while the narrow Grille members added texture and contrast against the larger structural wood elements. As mass timber becomes more common in civic and commercial spaces, 9Wood suspended ceilings complement larger wood structural elements and help create a cohesive design. Accessibility was essential, so 9Wood fabricated concealed access panels throughout the ceiling. These panels allow maintenance teams to reach overhead systems without removing or damaging the surrounding wood.

Outcome

As the terminal modernized its retail, dining, and safety infrastructure, the renovation carefully preserved the airport’s regional character while refreshing finishes throughout. The architect aimed to create a microcosm of New Mexico—even for travelers simply passing through.
