University of Washington Foster School of Business – PACCAR Hall

April 2, 2019 by

University of Washington Foster School of Business - PACCAR Hall — Seattle, WA

Solid Douglas Fir with Clear Finish

SKU(s): 2112-5

Situated in the heart of University of Washington’s gothic campus, the brand new 132,000SF Foster School of Business Paccar Hall sits next to UW’s oldest building. Emphasizing the building’s focus on ā€œinterconnectednessā€, the heavily-glazed five-story building includes terraces overlooking the quad, a cafĆ©, a 250-seat auditorium, administrative offices and dozens of classrooms. The interior prominently features FSC-certified vertical grain Douglas Fir linear wood panels in the four-story atrium.

The LEED Gold Paccar Hall is heavily daylit. Because 45% of the building’s surfaces are glass, wood offers a warm high-end finish to balance the glazing. Douglas Fir has strong ties to the region’s heritage and it was important to have the members extra thick and wide to match the grandeur and scale of the space. Per the LEED requirements, the wood had to be harvested within 500 miles from FSC-certified forests. In addition, it had to maintain structural integrity and architectural aesthetics even with exposure to the elements. This required us to dig deep within our supply chain.

After thorough research and subsequent samples, the architect selected FSC-certified vertical grain Douglas Fir. The break-through came when we were able to source this wood from the Hoopa Valley Indian Reservation in Northern California, an FSC-certified landowner. This location barely met the 500-mile requirement. ā€œIt was 462 miles to be exact,ā€ recounted our local rep. ā€œI remember the number because they wouldn’t believe me at first!ā€

Once the species and module had been selected, the focus turned to the installation of the 40-foot tall interior and exterior ceilings and custom mitered walls. The 12-foot long ceiling panels ran end to end for 250 feet and would have to be aligned perfectly. From the fourth-story walkways, the close-up sightline would reveal any misalignment along the long run. The panels weighed about 40 pounds each and had to be raised in a scissor lift both for the interior and exterior. There was little room for recourse once a panel was installed because of the extreme coordination required to maneuver the scissor lift around other trades.

The architect summarized the final installed product by saying, ā€œThe Paccar Hall building interior is a warm and rich environment because of the combination of finishes, especially the wood wall and ceiling panels and their textural relationship with the brick, metal, and glass in the space. It is quite striking.ā€ Paccar Hall is set to be a campus center for decades to come.

White Maple Veneer with Clear Finish

SKU(s): 5132-10-4324-24, 3108-2

In 2009 ESRI completed an extensive upgrade to their corporate headquarters. 9Wood played an integral role in the project and pushed forward the boundaries of innovation and coordination in manufacturing engineered-to-order specialty wood finishes.

The ESRI project was more than just a large job. The variety of products and design solutions 9Wood was required to offer in order to successfully complete the project was the very definition of custom. In all, 9Wood shipped to California 1,965 unique panel types, consisting of 25 distinct products. Among these product types were Acoustic Planks, bullnose trims, countertops, perforated and non-perforated wall and ceiling panels, angled ceiling panels, light cove panels, air diffuser grilles and door trims.

Even more than the varied custom products required for the job, the biggest hurdle to overcome was the requirement that all the wood in the project be sequenced. A full 12,000 square feet of material had to be tracked and coordinated so the veneer leaf sequence would be the same on the installed panels as it was when the leaves came off the logs several months prior. Control points were established along the length of the supply chain, and 9Wood carefully tracked each and every panel as it moved through the systems of six different companies on both sides of the continent.

Another example of the unparalleled project support 9Wood offered were the coordination drawings for the curved proscenium around the theater screen. Because the subcontractor did not want to field-cut the panels, and because the structure would require near-zero tolerances, 9Wood coordinated the exact positioning of the entire framing structure behind the panels.

ā€œIt is virtually unheard of for a manufacturer to be this involved on the front-end,ā€ says Joshua of the framing instruction 9Wood provided. ā€œTypically a manufacturer just provides materials. We were designing the entire approach, not just the products.ā€

Arizona State University – Interdisciplinary Science & Technology Building IV

April 2, 2019 by

Arizona State University - Interdisciplinary Science & Technology Building IV — Tempe, AZ

Solid Western Hemlock with Clear Finish

SKU(s): 1112-7, 2113-4

Enter the five-story atrium of the university’s newest science and technology building, look up, and wonder. How did these angular, integrated walls and ceilings come to be?

“The way we wrapped the wood from the horizontal to the vertical is innovative,” says Mathew Chaney, AIA, associate at Ehrlich Architects.” 9Wood created ceilings and cladding with a high degree of accuracy — very close to our design intent. I’d say, 98 percent close.”

Linear wood panel awnings are suspended over the elevator doors. They angle upward, steeply, and become vertical cladding for upper floor balcony rails.

“The challenge was to understand your corners and have panels come together and look uniform,” says TP Acoustics field superintendent Derrick Amerson.”It required critical shop drawings with critical dimensioning by 9Wood. The drawings were well executed.” The drafting team constructed detailed and coordinated shop drawings 40 pages in length.

Mathew Chaney, AIA, associate at Ehrlich Architects specified Western Hemlock — stained Teak. 9Wood provided staining canisters so the installer could retouch the Hemlock after making cuts.

“The atrium is designed to draw the eye into a vertical circulation,” says Chaney about his design intent.”The wood has unusual mass, but the panels are light in character.”
