Los Angeles Harbor College Theater & Music Hall

Los Angeles Harbor College Theater & Music Hall — Wilmington, CA

White Maple Veneer, Solid Western Hemlock with Custom Stain, Custom Stain

SKU(s): 4548-96, 1112-8

The LA Harbor College Theater, built in 1962, started renovation in earnest in 2010, after a general contractor defaulted in the early 2000’s. The project entailed a number of challenging factors in rehabilitating the space: functional design for a “double-duty” performance and meeting space, acoustical treatment, and aesthetics that tied in with the existing shell. These factors and the design-build construction required the manufacturers to sign up for tight schedule coordination, while offering their technical skill and a willingness to roll up their sleeves and drive the details.

The first challenge was delivering on the complex design, which was driven by the acoustical needs. To achieve optimum acoustical performance, an acoustical engineer advised in the development of geometric ceiling and wall shapes. “I don’t think there was a perpendicular joint in the whole building,” recalled 9Wood PM Brad Leonard. These shapes were clad with 9Wood flat wood tiles and Grilles, which also integrated the intricate lighting and other fixtures.

9Wood employed 3-D modeling to deconstruct the geometric shapes. “This was really two projects in one—the wall and ceiling–but they had to align,” added Leonard. “In the early model, when the geometry changed at one location, it created a ripple effect and changed the dimensions of all the panels.” The shop drawings detail over 300 unique panels. After approval, the panels were pre- cut and finished in Oregon. The panels were ready for install right out of the box, with labels matching per their shop drawing location, much like a giant jigsaw puzzle.

Aesthetically, the challenge was to give the theater a modern look that tied in with the existing shell, including doors and wainscoting. “The college wanted a warm finish that was faithful to the original design. Based on previous experience we liked White Maple and Hemlock,” recounted Moore. 9Wood provided a custom match per the control sample.

The end result is a space that breathes new life into the building. Architect Moore summarized, “9Wood was extremely proactive in the design development stage. The detailing was well thought-out and cohesive. We would highly recommend them to other architects, contractors, and clients.”

Baylor Sammons Cancer Center

Baylor Sammons Cancer Center — Dallas, TX

Red Oak Veneer with Clear Finish

SKU(s): 3208-2-4348-48, 1112-8

During its more than hundred-year history, the Baylor University Medical Center has grown from a 25-bed clinic to a nationally-recognized hospital that treats thousands of patients. The recent modernization of the facility complemented the existing university campus, harmonized modern healing techniques with natural materials, and achieved LEED Gold certification.

9Wood was first awarded the wood ceiling contract for the curved corridor late in the summer of 2009. The building was designed as an elliptical arc that lined up with an imaginary apogee. Innovative design solutions as well as extreme coordination with other trades and finishes were required to accommodate the design intent, acoustic performance and access requirements.

The design presented several challenges, beginning with the unusually-shaped panels. FSC Red Oak had been selected as the species for its natural color, strength, beauty and contribution to LEED certification. However, achieving trapezoidal- and triangular-shaped panels that conformed to a curve and also provided the required acoustical performance via face kerfs was extremely challenging. Borders with kerfs were designed unique to each panel, requiring a high level of coordination from drafting through production to installation.

The accessibility requirement for the plenum above the ceiling was another design challenge. The ceiling would have to utilize two types of suspension systems without compromising the overall look and feel. 9Wood’s Lift & Lock system offered accessibility by allowing the individual panels to be removed after installation, while the XL Channel system was ideal for the fixed panels around light fixtures. However, because the two attachment systems yielded different installed depths, a new fitting was developed specifically for this project to re-align the faces of the panels.

After the panels were designed and fabrication had begun, 9Wood flew the installing sub-contractor to its facility to train on how to field cut, handle and install the large custom panels. The three phases of the core and shell construction went so well that 9Wood was further contracted for both the tenant finish out and another local job: Texas Oncology. The effort 9Wood invested in planning and coordination up front ultimately resulted in 9Wood having zero punch list items at the final inspection.

Field Cutting Acoustic Planks and Acoustic Tiles

Acoustic planks and acoustic tiles can be tricky to cut in the field because of the vulnerable “teeth” that make up acoustic wood products.  By using the right tools and techniques, field cutting can be accomplished successfully.  (“Teeth” are the results of grooves cut into a wood panel which in turn intersect a hole drilled in the back of the panel. This combination groove …

Solid Douglas Fir, Solid Reclaimed Douglas Fir with Clear Finish, Clear Finish

SKU(s): 2514-4, 2112-4

The 30-story Park Avenue West Tower in downtown Portland, Ore., houses the office of Stoel Rives, a high-profile West coast law firm. The office features 9,489 sq.ft. of Douglas fir ceilings.

“Our client requested a timeless modern design,” says Michael O’Mara, AIA, LEED AP BD+C of ZGF Architects, LLP, Portland.

The coffered ceiling in the reception area was “designed in a fresh way looking to the future,” the architect says. The ceiling uses 3-foot by 3-foot box beams. The beams interact dimensionally with the millwork from floor to ceiling. They line up perfectly with the window mullions and glass panel dividers along the lobby staircase.

The ceilings in the private offices on floors 24 to 28 of the high rise differed from that of the public area. They use tongue & groove Douglas fir planks.

The break room features a reclaimed Douglas fir ceiling. Sourced from local farm structures, the reclaimed wood added a rustic touch to the refined office. O’Mara says they contributed points toward LEED® Platinum certification.

White Oak Veneer with Clear Finish

SKU(s): 1412-8, 1426-3

The Hillwood Development Company’s new offices at Turtle Creek, Dallas feature 10,576 square feet of white oak veneered, wood grille ceilings in the reception area, dining area, boardroom and second and third floor conference rooms.

The ceilings are comprised of 50 unique panel types and 1,055 total panels.

The office’s signature ceiling—a 3,206-square-foot, single elevation installation in the dining area—features 150 individual wood grille panels and seven specially designed access panels.

The wood grille panels have 12 to 15 blades of varying depths and spacings. Each panel had to be installed in proper sequence. But, the ceiling’s varying blade depths and spacings create a distinctive look.

“It was like assembling a giant jigsaw puzzle,” said Johnny Barnes, BakerTriangle Dallas Division president.

NV Portland — Portland, OR

Solid Western Hemlock with Custom Stain

SKU(s): 1115-3

Close coordination between ZGF Architects, Seattle, Washington, and 9Wood led to innovative ceilings in the lobby of a Portland condominium building known as The NV.

“The interior is expansive. It’s a deep space,” said Andrea Bellon, the project interior designer at ZGF Architects. “One device to keep it feeling airy was to use a wood trellis inside.”

The lobby features a 4,325 sq. ft., multi- elevation, crosspiece backer wood grille ceiling. It looks like custom millwork but, in fact, it’s comprised of 643 prefabricated wood grille panels and 15 pieces of trim.

Because ZGF and 9Wood worked early on, 9Wood was able to panelize a complicated design intent in as few component pieces as possible. It’s composed of only seven unique panel types and 104 lineal feet of trim.

“The manufacturer created a ceiling that looks site built, but it’s panelized,” the 9Wood rep said. “It allowed the acoustical subcontractor to function like a finished millworker.”
