Linear Wood Ceilings – The Most Common Questions

A linear wood ceiling is when you look up from the floor and see a nice, wide piece of wood. We often hear it referred to as a slat or a plank.

Solid Western Hemlock with Clear Finish

SKU(s): 1112-7, 2113-4

Enter the five-story atrium of the university’s newest science and technology building, look up, and wonder. How did these angular, integrated walls and ceilings come to be?

“The way we wrapped the wood from the horizontal to the vertical is innovative,” says Mathew Chaney, AIA, associate at Ehrlich Architects.” 9Wood created ceilings and cladding with a high degree of accuracy — very close to our design intent. I’d say, 98 percent close.”

Linear wood panel awnings are suspended over the elevator doors. They angle upward, steeply, and become vertical cladding for upper floor balcony rails.

“The challenge was to understand your corners and have panels come together and look uniform,” says TP Acoustics field superintendent Derrick Amerson.”It required critical shop drawings with critical dimensioning by 9Wood. The drawings were well executed.” The drafting team constructed detailed and coordinated shop drawings 40 pages in length.

Mathew Chaney, AIA, associate at Ehrlich Architects specified Western Hemlock — stained Teak. 9Wood provided staining canisters so the installer could retouch the Hemlock after making cuts.

“The atrium is designed to draw the eye into a vertical circulation,” says Chaney about his design intent.”The wood has unusual mass, but the panels are light in character.”

The Most Accessible Wood Ceiling

Accessibility and dropped wood ceilings are a classic conflict because you have your mechanical systems, HVAC, lighting, and electrical, and then you cover it all up with highly custom decorative wood products. With ceiling accessibility, you must think about the damage over time, whether you’re the designer or the facilities person taking a panel down. Because …

Abacus Wealth

Abacus Wealth — Santa Monica, CA

Solid Reclaimed White Oak with Clear Finish

SKU(s): 1126-3

Roof rafters from a hundred year old barn built in Kentucky are transformed into a faux “roof” in Abacus Wealth Partners’ office space thousands of miles away in Santa Monica, California.

When NBBJ Architects began work on the Abacus Wealth Partners office, themes of nature, Zen and healing were at the forefront. The architect reflected, “We wanted to create a space of nature, light, and serenity through materiality and form.”

To help achieve the design intent, NBBJ worked with 9Wood to fabricate one-of-a-kind ceiling grilles. The challenge for this boutique project: turn reclaimed White Oak rafter beams from a 19th century Kentucky barn into a one-of-a-kind suspended ceiling. The rawness of the rafters was the perfect material, according to NBBJ. “We wanted to bring that raw yet sophisticated part of nature into the space.”

Fabrication posed its own special challenges. Before milling reclaimed wood, it is critical to do metal-detection, to find fasteners and other foreign matter. If not, the saw blade certainly will! NBBJ specified a serpentine cut for each 2×6 slat. “The curves were to suggest inward movements into the lounge zones.” Fortunately, these challenges were overcome to fabricate the grilles according to spec.

The end result is a custom grille with a striking balance of elegance and rawness; large, rustic White Oak slats accented by a repeating gentle curve. It’s truly an eye-catching feature and met NBBJ’s design intent of “floating wood clouds.”

Field Cutting Acoustic Planks and Acoustic Tiles

Acoustic planks and acoustic tiles can be tricky to cut in the field because of the vulnerable “teeth” that make up acoustic wood products.  By using the right tools and techniques, field cutting can be accomplished successfully.  (“Teeth” are the results of grooves cut into a wood panel which in turn intersect a hole drilled in the back of the panel. This combination groove …
